Chatting is shift work - which surprises many newcomers. The reason is simple: you work when fans are online, and fans are online in their evening, often in a different time zone than yours.
Understanding prime time
The highest-spending fans are heavily US-based. Do the math: 8 p.m. on the US East Coast is the middle of the European night - and midday in Manila. That is why teams typically run:
- Evening shift: local fans plus the start of US prime time. A good entry point.
- Night shift (or day shift in Asia): full US prime time - usually the highest-revenue hours and popular with experienced chatters.
- Day shift: quieter; ideal for nurturing regulars, catching up and writing careful handover notes.
For applicants this means: flexibility around prime time is a genuine hiring argument. Whoever can cover the American evening gets onboarded faster.
Why handovers decide your reputation
On an active account, several chatters talk to the same fan in sequence - and the fan must never notice. That only works with clean handovers:
- Document running conversations: what was discussed, what mood, which buying signals?
- Maintain CRM notes: name, job, pet, last purchases - the details that create closeness.
- Name open threads: "He's about to tell me how his job interview went - ask him!"
Chatters whose handovers are a pleasure to take over get recommended inside the team. That is the hardest internal currency there is.
How many hours are realistic?
Focused chatting is more demanding than it sounds: several conversations in parallel, constant switching between personalities and moods. Six to eight hours per shift with breaks is realistic. Consistency beats heroics - agencies plan around you, so reliable hours are worth more than occasional marathons.
Does shift work fit your life?
Honest questions before applying:
- Can you work evenings or nights regularly without your life falling apart?
- Do you have quiet daytime hours to sleep if you take night shifts?
- Are you still friendly at 3 a.m. when a fan asks the same question for the fourth time?
If yes, you bring something many applicants lack. Part-time works too - see chatting as a side job.
Bottom line
Working hours are not fine print in chatting - they are the business itself. Cover prime time, master handovers, and you are valuable. Both are learnable: shifts, handovers and CRM discipline are module 5 of the certification course.
